The Power of Vulnerability

by Brené Brown

Brené Brown’s books have played a large part in my personal journey. In the process of learning, getting to know myself better and working with clients, I came across a Ted Talk video entitled The Power of Vulnerability featuring Brené Brown. This was my first introduction to Brené Brown, and the beginning of a long-term admiration for her work.

Brené Brown studies vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame.

Brené explains that most people “armor-up” in the morning before leaving for work. In other words, we get dressed, accessorise with what we deem appropriate for our audience of the day and adjust our personalities to what we think the world wants us to be. This pretense is just not sustainable.

We have such pre-conceived ideas of what we think we should be or should achieve and we find security in fitting into the mold. No-one wants to be the “square peg” in the “round hole”. It’s just easier to fit in.

Learning from The Power of Vulnerability

Vulnerability takes courage. Brené Brown invites us on a courageous journey. She believes that if we allow ourselves to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we are more open to authentic experiences that brings true meaning and purpose to our lives.
