Life Planning comes before Financial Planning

A holistic Financial Plan comprises three important parts: a Life Plan, a Financial Plan (which includes Scenario Planning and an Investment Strategy,) and an Estate Plan.

My approach to Life Planning is to open up meaningful conversations around money. Together we look at the combination of money and meaning; merging money with the life you would like to live. We align your dreams and aspirations, the vision you have for your life, with a Financial Plan to ensure that you are able to live a wholesome life.

Money should enable you to create a life filled with meaning and purpose.

Mastering who we are in relation to our money is an essential life skill.

What is Life Planning

You may have a plan for your money, how much you want to earn and how much you want to save. But do you have a plan for your life? What will you do with the money you earn?

A Life Plan sets your Financial goals on a clear path. It helps you determine how much you need, what you need it for and clarifies how much is enough.

It is your interpretation of what you want your life to look like, what your goals, dreams and aspirations are. Once you know what your life goals are, you can decide how to invest your money to enable your vision.

In this way, your money starts working for you. And money means something; a means of achieving the vision you have for your life.

Why you need a life plan

I am a firm believer in planning for your life first, before you can plan for your money. Working in the retirement sector, I often meet clients who are sorely disappointed with the way their retirement years turned out. Although their money is well looked after and they have more than enough to retire on, they feel completely detached from their money – and their lives. They have never considered what their lives will look like in retirement and what they will do with their time!

Your life plan is a detailed document of what you want to be, do, and have in your life. We put actual, practical steps in place to help your dreams come to fruition.

Consider this:

If your life turned out to be everything you wished for, what would it look like?
Where will you live?
Where will you work?
How much money would you have, or need?
What do you want your money to achieve for you?
What relationships will you cherish?
What about your health?
What will give you the greatest sense of purpose?
What will you do for fun?
What new skill will you learn?
How will you get involved in your community?

Money simply cannot be viewed in isolation – it is more than just a currency. Money can hold your dreams and goals; it may define personal success or self-worth; it can symbolise security; it could influence where your work and where you go on holiday, even how and where you live. Money can be viewed as something standing in the way of your freedom and happiness; or as a means to achieving your life’s purpose.

Once you are clear on the plans that you have for your life, you can start structuring your money to achieve your life vision.

What some of our clients have to say

Ronelle Baker

A life planning session with Kim is something to look forward to – I am always so grateful for how we live, our health, our families, what we’ve achieved and how our lives in the future may look like. However, “life” is not something that you can plan and sometimes things happen that change your perspective and emotions.  An example is the death of a dear friend or relative and the incumbent administrative hassle of such an event, the need to financially and emotionally support a family member or families moving away and therefore dynamics changing.  Life planning sessions help you prepare for unexpected events and these sessions certainly help you to cope. Being part of the Chartered family, we are reassured that all aspects of our lives are efficiently and effectively managed, and for this we are immeasurably grateful.

Retirement is the most underestimated change in someone life. The day you retire everything changes. Without professional life and financial planning support this can end up being the worst time of a person’s life! Thanks to Kim and her professional guidance I have transitioned into retirement with enthusiasm, ease and pleasure.
