Purple Cow

by Seth Godin

Have you ever won anything in your life? Well, I won the Purple Cow in a lucky draw. Not bad for a prize if you ask me!

During Seth’s Conference in New York, I won a limited edition poster of Purple Cow! This book reinforced my vision for financial planning in South Africa, and for Chartered Wealth Solutions. We would not follow the traditional mould of financial planning, we will offer something truly unique, something different with our true purpose to add value to the lives of our clients.

I came to coin the concept, Retirement, meaning an approach to retirement that imbues life with meaning and purpose.

My learning from Purple Cow

If you want growth in your business, you must be remarkable – be a purple cow! Direct your service at a small group of people who are passionate about the same thing, and they will end up doing your marketing for you. First and foremost, create a great service and always be on the look-out to create more purple cows. I took away three lessons from this book:

  1. Marketing is most successful through word-of-mouth recommendations.
  2. Not taking risks, is riskier, than taking risks. You have to be visible, stand out, and be truly remarkable.
  3. If you want your service to reach the masses, focus on the “early adopters” as a start and ensure that your service is easy sharebale.
