Creating Magic

Lee Cockerell and Disney Leadership Excellence Course

Chartered Wealth Solutions was now well established and by adding the Retire Successfully website to the Chartered family of brands, we felt what we were adding additional value to our clients. It was now time to look at how we could grow our business, but growing it in such a way to keep our clients “wowed” by what we do and what we offer.

Creating Magic is a truly inspiring book. Americans just seem to always do things bigger and better than anyone else! But Disney – and the Disney experience is just, well, fantastical.

Lee Cockerell also offers a Leadership training course based on his experiences and learning at Disney, and yes, you guessed it – I flew to Disney to experience the magic for myself and to attend the Disney Leadership Excellence course, qualifying from this in 2011.

To say I was impressed is an understatement. I was honestly “wowed” by the Walt Disney Resort and proudly sported my pink bunny ears as I discovered and experienced this new world of magic. Everything Lee Cockerell wrote in his book came true to life for me and I was one step closer to understanding how Disney manages to create ever-lasting magical experiences for their customers. Of course, our next family holiday was also mapped out and the year after, we all went as a family to experience the magic of Disney!

Learning from Creating Magic

“It’s not the magic that makes it work; it’s the way we work that makes it magic.” Lee Cockerell ran Walt Disney World® Resort operations for over a decade and in his book he shares the leadership principles that guided his own journey from a farm boy in Oklahoma to the head of operations for a multibillion dollar enterprise. Lee Cockerell outlines ten practical, common sense strategies for outstanding leaders in his book including:

  • Everyone is important
  • Make your people your brand
  • Burn the free fuel: appreciation, recognition, and encouragement.
  • Give people a purpose, not just a job.

Creating Magic shows us how to become better leaders by infusing quality, character, courage, enthusiasm, and integrity into our workplace and into our lives.
