What would bring more meaning to your life?
People at any age need to look at living significantly, not just successfully. Younger clients often do things that don’t inspire them or would ideally like to make changes to their lives now, for example, who they are with, where they live, what they do etc. In midlife, people start looking at ways to live wholeheartedly and engage with the world from a place of worthiness.
It starts with dreaming and visualising by asking yourself: what would my next chapter look like if it turned out well? And then putting careful and deliberate action...
Retiring too hastily
I will be introducing you to a new midlife client every month to find out what they would have done differently knowing what they know now. We’ll share midlife money lessons that have served us well, and also the worst money advice and habits you should never follow. There is no better place to learn and grow than talking to people who have experienced the trials and tribulations of transitioning into a new chapter in midlife in beyond. I hope these lessons (and regrets) will inspire you to pay attention to your lives now – no matter your age.
Now, let me introduce you to Lily...
Always pay yourself first
I’ve heard and shared many sage pieces of money advice with my clients. Sometimes we talk about money lessons we know now that we wish we had recognised earlier in our lives, and often we reflect on our money habits that have served us well. The habits that we are most thankful for.
I love the principle of cross-pollination between younger generations and elders, so this year, I have decided to dedicate the first half of 2023 to collating all the best money advice that I’ve picked up from my clients and share those with you – money habits that have paid off, lessons learnt, and wisdom...
Thank you for reimagining your lives with me this year.
Change is never easy. It takes a whole lot of courage to pause your tracks on the treadmill and reflect on better, more rewarding ways to enter the future. And through the turmoil and trying times that we’ve all faced this year, my utmost memory of 2022 will be the many clients who have made themselves vulnerable enough to face the future head-on.
Clients who were brave enough to take time out and take stock of their lives to visualise what a purposeful and fulfilling life would look like. Clients who tuned in and started the journey of becoming a friend with money instead of being a...
Why women should be confident managing their money
This is according to a recent research report on the black middle class by the UCT Liberty Institute of Strategic Marketing. The report shows that women are fast emerging as primary income earners who make financial decisions for and on behalf of their families.
In my experience spanning over fifteen years in the financial industry, it has been heartening to see how women have embraced change. From being historically side-lined when it comes to managing money, to attending planning meetings with the motivation and enthusiasm to grow their wealth. Yes, we may still lack a bit of...
Makeover your future
Are you thinking about redesigning your life? Do you have choices when it comes to reinventing and choosing a new path? Do you feel in control of your money? Have you reflected on how to use your money to enable the life you dream of?
These days, most of my conversations with clients are about transitioning. I’m seeing clients who used the lockdown days to reflect and dream, and it’s encouraging to see how many people have paused to take stock of their lives. These are some of the messages that I am hearing:
I want to get off the rat race and have a more balanced life.I want my life...
Paying it forward
Most people I talk to are thinking about living a more versatile and balanced life, and almost everyone I speak to worries about money. The question is: have you taken control of your money? How are you doing around planning for your present and future financial goals so you can live your best life knowing that your money will enable it?
October marks a highlight for the financial planning industry with the FPI financial planning week running from 3 – 7 October. The theme ‘Live your today and plan your tomorrow’ is so appropriate for the real challenges we are all facing right now.
I...
Do you talk about money with your partner?
The reality is that money touches everything in your relationship – your values, goals, dreams, priorities, habits and how you live your life. Many partners have different relationships with money and have conflicting attitudes toward debt, investing, earning, impulse buying, and spending priorities.
I see couples every day who don’t speak about money openly. Often, in planning meetings, partners disclose their money situation to each other for the first time. I have sat in meetings where one person takes complete control of the money while the other has no idea where they’re at...
My 21-year-old son shares the money lessons he learnt
Of course, the type of conversation you have with a small child will be very different to the one you have with your teenager. Remember that children learn from what they see and hear, so you may not realise that you are communicating when, in fact, you are.
As a financial planner, it’s my job to inspire people to pay attention to their money and to engage in money conversations. As a parent, I’m not always sure if I am succeeding with my own children, and the only way to know for sure is to ask them. My son Josh recently turned twenty-one, and this weekend my husband and I...
Are you intentional with your money?
My trip to New York two weeks ago with my friend Jean (we’ve been friends since the age of twelve) was not only about ticking off bucket wheel items, it was also about making experiences come true. We ticked off seeing Billy Joel live in Madison Square Garden – we love attending concerts! And I completed a 10km marathon in Central Park – done! I love it when your experience exceeds expectations. And that was running in New York for me. I’ve dreamed about doing it for so long! I really wanted to run a marathon, but the 10km race gave me the same goosebumps moment.
Running in Central Park...
