Set the wheel in motion

I am more convinced than ever that the secret to a healthy and happy life lies in the everyday things that we take for granted. 

At his recent Chartered presentation, Dr Wayne Derman made reference to the Blue Zones.  These are geographical areas in the world where people have been found to live longer – and better!

These five areas are:  Sardinia, Italy; the islands of Okinawa, Japan; Loma LInda, California; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece.

More significant than where they are, is what the residents of these regions have in common, factors that contribute to longevity and quality of life.

These factors include:

  • human interactions – putting family above other concerns
  • a mostly vegetarian diet, with many legumes – eat smaller meals
  • constant moderate physical activity – daily load-bearing exercises
  • taking time to quiet the mind
  • participating in a spiritual community and being connected through the same values

How is this relevant to us, besides the obvious lessons regarding living longer?
I was delighted to see what synergy exists between these ingredients for a long and meaningful life and the Wheel of Balance of which Retire Successfully has always been such a proponent. Create a balanced life by seeking to live significantly in all areas: Work, Give back, Relationships, Money, Learning, Health, Purpose and Play.
