I have been struggling with the process this year. Although writing me second book, which will follow on RETIREMEANT – get more meaning from your money, has been prominent on my vision board this year, I have been extremely frustrated with the process. At times I felt that I haven’t achieved anything to get me closer to my goal. So this is what I’ll be doing differently next year: I will focus my energy on the enjoyment of writing daily – no matter how many words I put down; and I will enjoy my conversations with clients, listening to their insightful stories that will be included in the book. The book will be the outcome, but the goal is to love the process.
While my goal is writing my book, I want to encourage you to put down “Paying attention to your Money” as one of your goals for 2020. Remember that your life is enabled by your money – money makes your life goals and dreams possible. So, you cannot plan for your life if you don’t also plan for your money. And I want to remind you to not purely focus on the outcome: it’s not about only paying attention to the X amount you want saved. It’s about owning and taking pleasure in the process: love what you do to earn money; enjoy the empowering feeling of saving and watching your investments grow and feel good about the decisions you make along the way to reach your goal.
I’ll leave you with a quote by author and law professor, Ozan Varol: When we switch to a process-focused mindset, we condition ourselves to derive intrinsic value out of the activity. The process becomes its own reward. We get into a state of flow and lose sense of time as the hypnotic power of process draws us in.
Wishing you all a very happy festive season treasuring everyone in your life that’s important to you,
Remember, when it comes to your money, be inspired, be brave and be on purpose,
